2-3pm Learning never stops – NECTAR's fortnightly research webinar series Join us for the final NECTAR research webinar of the year! Our first speaker will be Charles Martin. Charles is a lecturer in computer science working in music technology, machine learning and human computer interaction. Charles gained his PhD from ANU in 2016 and worked as a post doc at the University of Oslo before returning to ANU last year. Charles will talk about combining music and computer science and different approaches to research and university life in Australia and the Nordic region. Our second speaker will be Simon Connor. Simon is a fellow in the Archaeology and Natural History unit of the School of Culture, History and Language. His research is about how environments have changed over thousands of years in response to fires, human activities and climate. He's been lucky enough to learn from local communities around the world, and has worked in and out of academia, small business and social enterprise. Postponed until 2021 EFS information session – NECTAR special edition Are you a lecturer, course convenor, tutor or do you teach in some shape or form? Have you heard of the EFS as a way to get internationally-accredited recognition of your teaching experience but are not sure whether you should apply to become a fellow? At this NECTAR special edition of the EFS information session you will hear from fellow ECAs why they think becoming an EFS Fellow is a worthwhile endeavour and what drives their passion for teaching. You will learn about the nitty-gritties of an EFS application and there will be plenty of time to ask questions. The workshop will be delivered via Zoom in collaboration with the EFS team. Our first speaker will be Ariun Bayarjargal. Ariun is an Associate Lecturer at Research School of Economics. Her research areas are inequality, microeconomic analysis, and policy studies. She will talk about her research about the disproportionate impact of economic boom and bust on top income earners and will share her experience in developing a network as an ECA. Our second speaker will be Barry Yau, a senior lecturer in the practical legal training program in the ANU College of Law. Barry will detail how he has reshaped the teaching-research nexus to connect with his students through blogging his research, before they embark on a career as lawyers. Barry’s blogging has had a positive impact on students as they grapple with perceptions of career success, ethics, wellbeing and work-life balance. Come and join the conversation! 2-3pm Learning never stops – NECTAR's fortnightly research webinar series Join NECTAR's fortnightly research webinar series, stay connected with ANU ECAs and learn some valuable skills along the way. Our first speaker will be Galen Cuthbertson who is a PhD candidate at the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics. His work explores the use of complex machine learning models in humanities and social science research. Galen will discuss his path from philosophy and 'traditional' literary studies to statistical modelling, and why he thinks that the computational turn in the humanities is here to stay. Our second speaker will be Annamaria De Rosa. Annamaria is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Plant Sciences division at the Research School of Biology. Annamaria recently completed her PhD at ANU, and soon after started her research position. Annamaria researches plant channel proteins called aquaporins that provide highly selective transport of a variety of solutes vital for plant growth. She will share her experiences on transitioning from a PhD to a postdoc and some highlights of her postdoc so far, including insights from two innovation challenges her lab team recently participated in, the H2O Hackathon and the BridgeHub Water Challenge. Come to NECTAR’s Pitch perfect event, practice your pitch and receive feedback from your peers. This is not an introduction workshop on how to write a pitch. Attendees are required to have a short pitch prepared when they come to the event and need be willing to test it on a (very) small and friendly audience. This event will be delivered via Zoom. At this week’s webinar, two Grand Challenge Research Fellows will be sharing their experiences of working in an interdisciplinary research program that looks at solving one of the world’s biggest challenges, the Zero-Carbon Energy for the Asia-Pacific Grand Challenge. Our first speaker will be Reza Fazeli from the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Reza has been involved in several projects focusing on the transition to sustainable energy systems in Portugal, USA and Iceland before joining ANU in January 2020. He will talk about his prior experience and how they prepared him for the role as a Grand Challenge Research Fellow. Our second speaker will be Wenting Cheng from the College of Law. Wenting worked as a junior researcher at a think tank in China for 5 years before completing her PhD at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet) at ANU. She will speak on ‘Global governance of clean technology dissemination’ and share her experience of extending research topics to areas beyond PhD and fostering supportive networks within academia. Our first speaker will be Kate Harriden from the Fenner School of Environment and Society. Kate is a Wiradyuri woman who long ago rejected the ‘career’ construct. That the learning never stops, however, is something she wholeheartedly embraces. In fact, for those committed to the career construct, learning could be considered her ‘career’. Our second speaker will be Melde Van Ingelgom. In her interactive talk ‘Where will we live next year?’, Melde will relate her experiences as the partner of an ECA. Having moved countries twice to support her partner’s academic career, she will share some of the strategies she uses to build a life in a new country. 10am-12pm Being influential The world needs research more than ever; but to actually influence decisions our communication needs to be persuasive. Become a more influential researcher by better understanding and motivating your audiences. Discover the fundamentals of values-based communication using examples from social psychology, cognitive linguistics and behavioural economics research. Gain better understanding of the role of emotions and facts in persuasion. Share tips and ideas with peers. The workshop will be facilitated by Mark Chenery from Common Cause. This is a 3-part online workshop (3x 2hrs), the second and third part will be delivered on 10 and 15 September, 10am-12pm. Participants need to be available to attend all three parts and will be required to practice some of the concepts introduced during the first and second part as homework. She will talk about her journey through the video game development industry, entrepreneurism, policy and politics, moving in and out of academia, and how she applies her unique set of experiences to her work at ANU. Our second speaker will be Tamara Riley who is a PhD Candidate within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Program at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH). Tamara will discuss key learnings gained through her career journey into research, and her interest in One Health (the relationships between animal, human and environmental health). Our first speaker will be Georgia Pike. Georgia is as a post-doc at the ANU Medical School and a visiting fellow at CMHR. Her work encompasses music, health, history and education, currently focussing on the role of the arts in health education, and the impact of singing with people living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. At this week’s webinar Georgia will be sharing her thoughts on working ‘outside the box’, exploring the challenges and joys of working across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Our second speaker will be Siobhan McCarthy. Siobhan is Research School of Biology alumni where she did her PhD and a post-doc in retinal biochemistry. A decade ago, she made a career change to secondary school teaching and now is a science teacher at Canberra College. At this week's webinar she ponders that journey as well as the dichotomy of “Over-qualified / under utilised” and “Bravo! We need more like you”. Mari is a researcher at JCSMR where she studies gene-environment interactions. At this week's webinar she will ask the question "Does it spark joy?" and hopes to start a conversation around the topic of work-life navigation and the role of values in making career choices. Our second speaker will be Chirag Kasbekar from the Research School of Management. Chirag will talk about his research on the evolution of organisations and industries over time and space and how this is affected by changes in social and economic environments. The current pandemic is an excellent example of such environmental change. He will touch upon the potential for cross-disciplinary work in organisational research and the challenges involved. He will also talk about the way in which his industry experience informs his work and how his work can inform industry practice. Dandan is a biomedical researcher with a PhD in cancer biology and clinical medicine background. She coordinated an early phase clinical trial during her PhD. Now she is working as a research officer in the Liver research lab at the ANU Medical School and Canberra Hospital. Today she will share her experience as an ECR and as an international female researcher in Australia. Our second speaker will be George Carter. George is a Research Fellow at the Coral Bell School in CAP and the Co-Director of the ANU Pacific Institute. A career in academia was not what he had in mind when he came to ANU in 2012. His intention was to return home to Samoa – and resume his work in government, politics and community. However, for the past nine years he has found a new home in academia; from pastoral care, student politics, to teaching and research. George will share how his research and teaching are a reflection of upbringing in the islands, an appreciation of opportunities at ANU to increase Pacific academic excellence and a passion for more Pacific content and people at universities. Drawing on analogies to Netflix, theatre and cinema, Barry will compare his long-standing asynchronous online teaching at ANU with reflections of his casual lecturing at another university where his synchronous face-to-face teaching rapidly transformed to teaching synchronously online. Our second speaker will be Deirdre Feeney, who is a sessional lecturer at the School of Art & Design and an iLEAP Learning & Teaching Fellow at CLT. Her multi-disciplinary collaborative research explores optical image systems as perceptual tools for generating wonder. Deirdre will speak about her collaborative endeavours with the Research School of Physics, sharing how this collaboration began during her PhD in visual art and has continued to develop through subsequent projects. Our first speaker will be Isabel Mudford, who is a PhD Candidate in the School of Sociology at ANU. Her research is analysing the emerging category of LGBTIQ health and the role of community health organisations in making and using this category. In her presentation, Isabel will critically examine the use of the Minority Stress Theory to explain the high rates of cigarette smoking in the LBQ women's community in Australia. Our second speaker will be Jhana de Silva. Jhana is a PhD Candidate at the Research School of Psychology. Her research explores how we integrate sensory information in the brain to create a holistic sense of self. Learn more about how Jhana uses perceptual illusions such as the Rubber Hand Illusion – an illusion which causes the participant to feel ownership over a prosthetic hand – to explore how different conditions can alter participant’s body awareness. Chris will talk about the role of guerrilla thinking in her recent completion of a DECRA post-doc at the ANU School of History and start this month as an associate professor at UC's 50/50 By 2030 Foundation. She will argue the big problems won't be solved without more scholars taking the initiative on self-organised H+SS and HASS+STEM collaborations, and talk about her collaboration with ANU RSCS's most excellent Computational Media Lab as an example. Our second speaker will be Katharina Bonzel who is a lecturer in Screen Studies at CASS. She will share her research on the films and TV shows we all watch, in particular as we find ourselves at home in isolation, and what they can tell us about the world we live in.
